Nowadays everyone is aware about the problem of throwing cooking oil without treating it in the right way. All of us know that in our cities there’s a place where you can go with your used oil and they will process it and recycle or destroy it.
However, most of us aren’t doing that. Sometimes we try to keep in an old bottle or tin the used oil because we think someday we’re carrying it to the right place. But at the end, we realize that we don’t have time enough, or simply we are lazy, and the amount of used oil keep increasing in our kitchen for months.
The result is that tones of used oil go to our drainage systems. It’s estimated that 1 litter of oil contaminates 1000 liters of water. It causes different kind of problems:
- Environmental problems
- - Waste water is going to our oceans, seas and rivers.
- - Impact on wild life in water.
- - Restriction in the reuse of waste water.
- Economical problems
- -It makes difficult the treatment of waste water, so it’s more expensive.
- -Our costs on drainage systems increase.
It’s estimated that the cost of removing used oil from waste water is about 2.5 € per kilogram.
What do we need to do to solve that? Recycle! But the authorities have the role to make easier the process of recollect the maximum cooking oil as possible.
We present a good solution, implemented in different cities of Basc country. It consists on creating a new container where you can leave your cooking oil. So integrating all the possible wastes in the same place.
How it works
The picture below shows the main points about how it works. They present you a bottle where you put your oil, when it’s full you go to the special container and you introduce the bottle and the container gives you back another bottle. So you always have in your home a clean bottle to store your cooking oil.
Once the container is full they empty the container and carry it to their plants where they recycle and convert used oil in different products:
- Biodiesel
- Cutting Oils
- Cosmetic Soap
The advantages of this system are:
- The elimination of a waste that greatly pollutes water.
- The reuse of treated water.
- Lower costs in the treatment of waste water.
- Reduction in the deterioration and obstruction of drainage systems.
- Reduction in the probability of the spreading of microorganisms that are harmful to health.
- Reduction in the dependence on energy from overseas.
